Home Business Start-Up: Establishing Your Business Office

Alright, so far, you are on the right track with regards to your home-based business start-up to checklist. It is imperative to complete as much as you can before you start operating your home-based business. So far, you have completed the following: created a business plan, chose your business structure, filed necessary business document and opened necessary business accounts.

The next step would be establishing your business office at home. This process is not just clearing out a space for your office but it also involve things such as :

  • Purchasing the necessary office furnitures and equipment such as desk, chairs, computer, fax machine, telephone, internet connection, etc.
  • Purchasing office supplies and stationeries carrying your business logo and contact information
  • Purchase necessary software such as financial and customized business softwares
  • Establish an Online Presence
  • Creating A Work Schedule

Set-up A Home Office

Ensure that you identify your place of business at home and establish boundaries to ensure that it is separated from your home activities. You need to make sure that it is used exclusively and regularly for your business in order for you to claim it as a tax deduction on your business return. You will also need to buy the necessary office supplies and furnishings such as desks, chairs, fax,  machine, computers, printers, file cabinets, etc. If you plan on selling products, you also need to plan on where to store inventories. Initially, a section of your garage or your home office would be ideal.

Order company stationery

This is important in creating a professional image for your business. I’m talking about having business cards, stationery, envelopes and pens with your company name and logo on it. Business cards and stationeries with your business name on it are also a great marketing tool. Whenever you meet someone new, handing out business cards is a great way to introduce yourself. You can also use business cards to as a referral tool.

Purchase the necessary software

Determine the necessary software you need for your business. This could be an Accounting software to keep track of your income and expenses, Microsoft office suites (Word, Excel, and Access) and an Acrobat reader for creating and reading documents, customized business software for your operations, etc.

Establish an On-line Presence

We are in the information age and majority of the businesses has created a website in order to establish an on-line presence. When customers or clients want to get information about a business, the first thing that most of them would do is go in the internet. Having a website will also present a professional credibility for your business.

Set-Up Work Schedule

Just because you are working at home, you would think that you may not need a schedule and you can work at any time. This could be a big mistake for majority of home based business owners. You may want to treat your home based business as if you were at an outside office so you don’t always mixed up the business activities with your home activities.
